PCGP Episode 83: Starcraft 2 Exclusive
It’s about time.
With today’s epic announcement of Starcraft 2 in Seoul, South Korea, PC Gamer can finally go public with a cover story that spent years in the making. Greg recounts his trip with DJ to the seldom seen halls of Blizzard this past Monday, where they were given an exclusive first look at the game — including assets and gameplay that will go unseen at Blizzard’s event this weekend. Upon hearing the news, Gary is overcome with nerd lust, and he willingly trades the chance to play every other game due this year in order to get his hands on this long anticipated RTS super-sequel.
No other news, questions or playlists this week, kids. It’s Starcraft 2 overload. Plug in.

Ha ha, this podcast is positively moist with nerdy anticipation..!
Personally I don’t really care about StarCraft but it’s nice to hear that kind of love.
May 19th, 2007 at 10:54 am
Jeremy:
Gary drops a “shit” at around 45:15.
May 19th, 2007 at 11:14 am

May 19th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Oh glory days… damn i really wish i hadnt lost my Starcraft CD… all i can find is my Brood War one… damnit…
How i’m gonna get nostalgic?
May 19th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Rye…that stinks, but you can get StarCraft for pretty cheap these days. I reinstalled BW the other day in anticipation for this, and it’s still tons of fun.
I’m with The Vede…I’ve been wanting a Diablo-style game in the SC universe for a long time now.
May 19th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
AWESOME!!!! about damn time! I wonder how the end product will look like…. End product of WC3 was incredibly different from its initial launch.
May 19th, 2007 at 4:19 pm
So I just installed Windows Vista (Home Premium) and its very slick, but the buttons for the imbedded player for the pc gamer podcast are broken (I’m using IE7) so I’m stuck downloading the mp3 and playing the podcast with media player. Anybody have any ideas as to which plugin I need to use the imbedded player/
May 19th, 2007 at 4:30 pm
nvm I got it, it was either flash or shockwave
May 19th, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Thanks Neebs.
May 19th, 2007 at 5:37 pm
wooohoooo!!! now i need to upgrade my pc!!! xD
May 19th, 2007 at 6:16 pm
You can find a lot of great videos of starcraft 2 on youtube, if you look around a bit. Check out parts 1 and 2 of this demonstration of some of the new or modified units in SC2!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1KnmnFxHoE&mode=related&search=
Part 2 is just a click away on the “related videos” bar on the right.
May 19th, 2007 at 6:24 pm
oops. there’s a part 3 too! don’t forget it
May 19th, 2007 at 7:13 pm
wicked… looks sweet… just when i was thinking there wasnt any games to make me look forward to… I mean my PC is just too old to handle Crysis and all the other heavy hitters, which makes me sad.
At least Blizzard has my back!
May 19th, 2007 at 7:55 pm
It looks like blizzard will incorporate some of the dx 10 features. God I love SC so much. SC single player was so great, part of the reason being that you were in the universe, other characters addressed you (not the character you’re playing) as cerebrate, captain, or executor to do this or that. That made the single player game play and story so immersive. I hope they continue that. Oh, and map editor is a must! zone control FTW!
May 19th, 2007 at 8:36 pm
Hey Sheep - they’ve said that no decisions have been made about DX10, and the current alpha version is DX9 only. And yes, they WILL ship with a map editor.
May 19th, 2007 at 10:53 pm
I WANNA PLAY STAR CRAFT 2 RIGHT NOW!!!!!!! …o and Dan S they will ship with a campaign editor…WOW WHO WOULD OF GUESSED!!!!!! campaign editor is the reason half the people still play star craft!!!
May 19th, 2007 at 10:54 pm
Zont control sux btw sheep….DIPLOMACY 7.7 FTW WOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!! clan NaTo ftw
May 19th, 2007 at 10:59 pm
Greg is a genius, an action RPG with StarCraft stuff would be bitchin’.
Sheep: Did you ever play any of the C&C games? In all the cinematics in almost every C&C game the actors in the FMVs address the player directly to give orders on what to do.
May 20th, 2007 at 1:28 am
Did Logan utter a single word during that entire podcast?
May 20th, 2007 at 2:58 am
he laughed maniacally
May 20th, 2007 at 10:17 am
I think Logan said something when Greg described his young self as a spoiled brat. I had totally forgotten he was there.
May 20th, 2007 at 10:48 am
hmmm…. SCII sets up World of Diablo III in the sequence…
May 20th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Jim Raynor FTW!
May 20th, 2007 at 11:25 am
where did 1up get 11/20/07 release date?
http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3159435
May 20th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
I listened to this one twice because it is just too sweet.
May 20th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
styc9: yeah, I played a lot of CnC Tiberian Sun and played through the entire CnC 3 single and do similar thing which made single player lot more immersive than other, but when I was writing that comment, I was thinking of games like WC3 and rise of legends where you were basically watching causes & reactions of the characters doing that or that which makes the story less power IMO. Furthermore, I really liked the briefing room setting in which the heroes discuss the mission with you and others. (Also, FMV is meh for me because most of the time it has not so great acting and, in CnC 3, for some reason, it felt incredibly odd seeing those actors on CnC universe).
Dan: nice to hear from ya, thanks for clearing those up for me. You’re still in Korea I assume?
May 20th, 2007 at 12:38 pm
@Crew: Does anyone mind if I (do my very best) and write transcripts and post them on like, a Freewebs or something?
May 20th, 2007 at 5:45 pm
Sheep: Go grab a C&C First Decade pack and play some of the older games where there weren’t any well known actors, the acting still isn’t great but in C&C 1 and Red Alert 1 in the cut scenes you are still addressed directly and your orders are given with a bit more seriousness, when EA took over things started to get cheesy with all the joking and stuff.
May 20th, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Jumpsteady - They must have pulled that date entirely out of their asses. Blizzard has said only one thing when asked about release dates: “When it’s ready.”
Sheep - yeah, I’m still out here. I’m taking a couple of days to explore, since it would be a bit silly to fly 12 hours to see just one convention center then get right back on the plane.
May 20th, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Mmmmm Red Alert 2… Please my special ops gal, lean over a little more with that tank top….
oh yes… at least Red Alert 2 seemed to be aware of how utterly cheesy its cutscenes were… with its Mind Controlled Squids destroying the subs… brilliant.
I really hope they do have some hero elements taken from Warcraft 3… I mean inventory and stuff i dont want, but leveling up and special skills i do; In the original starcraft whenever you got supposedly story characters to protect it was basically telling you:
“Here’s a vulture you get, but if you use it in combat you fail the mission.” Poor Raynor, so cool, but never given anything good until Brood War; I think, i havent played it in like years…
May 20th, 2007 at 10:33 pm
Neebs: If you want to give it a shot, send them to me (jeremy at this URL) and I’ll post transcripts here. That’d be mighty cool of you, though I think you’re a tad insane.
Is this something people would like to see on a guaranteed ongoing basis?
May 20th, 2007 at 11:39 pm
i posted your site on all of the most viewed for You tube all 5 pages cause The Starcraft Fanatics [me included :”'’)] must have everything Starcraft LOL i’m such a geek. Never been so happy to be a geek.
P.S. Prep your Servers for the bandwidth
May 20th, 2007 at 11:48 pm
Yea they knew they were being cheesy with Red Alert 2 and the original Red Alert was somewhat cheesy bit still took itself seriously enough when it had to. C&C 3 really does have some wince inducing moments in the FMVs that it could really have done without like when the GDI chick tells you you’ll be getting Mammoth tanks on one mission and she says “Dare I say this mission might actually be….fun.” I wanted to punch myself in the head. Still C&C 3 is a good game though.
StarCraft 2 I’m going to wait and see what comes of it before I buy it because I didn’t like what they did to WarCraft 3, I was really disappointed with the whole hero thing and having the level them up and all that crap, I’m glad that so far they’re not having any of that stuff in the game according to what we heard in the podcast.
May 20th, 2007 at 11:56 pm
no matter what from what i saw i’m buying it but i never pre-order to afraid of that method how does it work? so i can get into it finally O_o instead of waiting a month especially for Starcraft 2 i would say a month nvm forgot its blizzard the best Game Development Company Ever will get it Day 1 just Long ass line ups _-
May 21st, 2007 at 12:10 am

Also How does the Pre-Order thing work?
May 21st, 2007 at 2:23 am
Pre-ordering games is simple, you go to your game shop, tell them what you want to pre-order and give them a down payment of $5 or $10 or more if you have it then when the game comes in you pay the remaining balance (if any) and it’s yours. Nothing to be afraid of, I pre-ordered Tiberian Sun and C&C 3 no problems.
May 21st, 2007 at 10:01 am
if there was only 1 game I can play this year, I would probably stick with Crysis, I’m a sucker for FPS,
May 21st, 2007 at 10:05 am
Hey Jeremy don’t bother with bleeping out swears. Were not monitored by any tv companies so let it lose. Also Neebs complains about a “shit” but he says it so why can’t he here it?
May 21st, 2007 at 12:13 pm
oo alright thx, to early to pre-order starcraft 2? lol. Yea FPS is my favorite Genre and Halflife 2 has been my #1 game for half a decade but starcraft has always been my absolute favorite forever in my subconscious :’) man i’m such a nerd
May 21st, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Pixar was the first company that jumped to mind when looking for an analogy for Blizzard. If I had to come up with game companies, I would say Black Isle (before Lionheart) and Bioware.
May 21st, 2007 at 4:30 pm
Go betrayals! That was one of the best things ever about battle.net!
May 21st, 2007 at 5:38 pm
I would say it’s probably too early to pre-order StarCraft 2. I’d wait and see if they offer any cool pre-order packages like EA did with C&C 3, if you pre-ordered C&C 3 you got a DVD with some samples of the FMVs and stuff that was on the Kane Edition bonus disc and you got a free copy of the original C&C.
May 22nd, 2007 at 1:10 pm
u sould go see the blizzard website its the big announcement there of starcraft II
May 22nd, 2007 at 3:42 pm
yea, dont pre-order Starcraft 2 until Blizzard unveils the collector’s edition, because really, thats what all the Starcraft fans here really want.
Man i cant wait to see what custom maps get made in Starcraft 2… Warcraft 3 has some amazing total conversions.
May 22nd, 2007 at 6:09 pm
I just hope they make the story characters resurrectable in the single player game so that we can actually use them. I don’t really care if they are heroes in multi player though. I know many people don’t want them and I’m fine with that for the multi player game, but I really hope they are there in some form in the single player game, even if it’s just the resurrection.
Goodness that was quite a ramble
May 22nd, 2007 at 8:11 pm
did u 4get to mention the very first dx10 game? Lost Planet: Extreme Condition? and the launch of ATIs DX10 card? OMFGBBQ! thats big news my friends
May 22nd, 2007 at 8:29 pm
I was yelling at my computer when you couldn’t name anyone else who had constantly excelled in thier medium as Blizzard had, “Joss Whedon! Joss Whedon!”
May 23rd, 2007 at 1:19 am
Assassin’s Creed trailer at gametrailers.com that game looks friggin’ sweet.
May 23rd, 2007 at 8:04 pm
Synergistic - Even Joss Whedon has his missteps, even if they weren’t necessarily his fault. Alien Resurrection, anybody? And then there’s Titan AE (which I didn’t actually hate, but is kind of critically reviled).
May 23rd, 2007 at 8:23 pm
I should go preorder Duke Nukem Forever…
May 24th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
@pepper_roni - I actually find it MORE humorous when they beep out that particular swear word. I mean, without that beep, we’d never have *BEEP* Commander.
May 24th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
cunt commander FTW!
May 24th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
Whoa, Joss Wheded did Titan AE? That must have been why I liked it so much. My favoret part was when it turned out that most of the main characters were badguys. I need to find/watch that again.
Oh and Starcraft Twooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
How exciting. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Well in the first game, Kerrigan became evil. Then she became more evil. Maybe she’ll do a 360 and become good again. I bet you guys woulden’t have expected that! A kind of reverse Arthas or something.
May 25th, 2007 at 2:18 pm
I’m with you Gary. I would take Starcraft 2 over all the games coming out this year combined. Heck, I would take a playable demo.
June 13th, 2007 at 1:07 am
i love pc gamer
