PC Gamer UK Podcast 27: PCs Vs Ponsoles
To explain what is going on here I shall paraphrase The Lonely Island: “Promote Synergy - LIKE A BOSS!”
Ross, Tim, Tom and Craig of PC Gamer UK do the following:
1) Discuss what 2K showed Tom of BioShock 2, previewed in our special 200th commemorative issue, on-sale in the UK on Thursday.
2) Pretend PC Gamer has been going for 200 years instead of 200 issues - a weak gag expounded to great effect by Kieron on our back page this month.
3) Spill all on what Plants Vs Zombies is like to play - reviewed in our new issue - and why it’s the best game of the year so far. Since recording this podcast, the song we discuss has been released as a trailer.
4) Each name a reason why they love PC gaming - we list 200 in the magazine - which quickly turns into each naming something they hate about console gaming, which includes Tim messing up the word ‘console’ to humourous effect.
5) Answer twenty odd questions from PC Gamer’s Twitter followers - follow us here - most of them current contributors to PC Gamer or its pseudo-rival PC Zone.
6) Strongly suggest that Ross doesn’t want to ‘do’ your mum.
- Tom Francis

Umm…lolwut?
April 27th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
What is this horrible, horrible podcast doing in my PC Gamer podcast feed?
April 27th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
They’re British.
LIKE A BOSS
April 27th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
WTF?! I was going to subscribe to the UK PC Gamer just to see how they differ but I saw here: https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/store/displayitem.asp?sid=462&id=4330&custid=28@04@20096884@256566431
Its about $130 to get it for one year and about $80 even if you lived in UK. WTF?!
Christ all Magazines in the UK are way too expensive. How do they stay afloat?
April 27th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
@Lupin Saiko
I contribute to the float - $USD 17.95 per quarter for Edge and I hardly read it. Kind of depressing now that you bring it up…
April 27th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
What is this awesome awesome podcast doing in my PC Gamer podcast feed? It’s such a strange and unsettling experience…
April 27th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
@Lupin Saiko - they have to charge more to pay for all of those extra U’s. Also, this is the difference between a magazine that’s supported by advertisements (PCG US) and one that is supported by customers paying what it costs to make plus a reasonable profit margin to make it a sustainable business (PCG UK).
April 28th, 2009 at 1:36 am
I still don’t listen it, I was just on my iTunes and saw PC gamer UK podcast downloading and I came here to see WTF is going on.
I think it will be like: Gary Witta’s World. All bloody British. I hope is ok and hey! don’t you dare to not make US podcast this week cus of this.
Also I just find out that the new EIC is also a “Gary”, when will we gonna have him on the podcast so we can judge him?, also I will like to see older IECs passing by someday like Kristen or The Vede. Also I miss the senior inter Norm
@Dan S: Hey Im love X-Com, I played a lot when I was at college, will you point me to a very pro guide, I remember completing the game but never on higher difficulty. Or make a pro guide yourself I will love to hear from your X-Com pro tactics and I think the turn based combat of X-Com will be a great multiplayer game.

Not to come off as a dick, but the reason PCG UK is more expensive is because it’s, well… better. There are fewer ads, and the magazine itself is bigger, it is taller, wider and has more pages. Also, there is a lot more of the cultural side of PC Gaming. (Off the top of my head) You have: Previews, Devil Advocate, The Spy, Industry News, Developer Interviews, Reviews, Cables (Letters), Culture (Extra-life), Demo section, Mod section, Hardware section (Best, Mid-range, Entry hardware ect) and guides on PC stuff like overclocking.
I went on holiday to America last year and picked up an issue of PCG US, I went to walmart of all places (Walmart = copy and paste of asda (I know they’re owned by the same company)). ANYWAY, the copy that I bought was 3 months out of date and hidden at the back of the rack, I did go back and got an up-to-date copy.
And I counted it, just under half of the pages had advertisements. There was 2 pages in the whole FC2 issue that had a double page article on it. However, it was cheaper than the UK version.
Thanks for posting the UK version here too, I lose my feeds and forgot about the UK one a few months back

@ Netram:
Your football suck!
Take that Brits!
It’s on!
April 28th, 2009 at 12:32 pm

April 28th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Love it. Maybe it is the accent, but those guys are funny as hell
April 28th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
I think PC Gamer has merged with just about everything possible.
April 28th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Shweet i got rainbow six vegas 2 for 9.99
April 28th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
GunmanX:
What do your football have? Outdated players like Beckham?
Your 11 a side of monkey wrestling sucks
April 28th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Not horrible but I like the US one better, at least with the home crew I don’t have to keep adjusting my volume when someone else talks so I can hear the conversation.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
I find it hilarious when British people get all upset at an American who is trolling them. Its my favorite hobby.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
Sweet. Is this the new model? PCG Malaysia next week?
April 28th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
@Netram if I could maybe find a way to do the quarterly Id try it out cause the lack of ads and more content/oversized seems like it’d be cool. I had a feeling the increase prices was either cause of no ads or less ads as the general vibe of the UK seems to be less tolerant of a “shit storm” of ads than we are.
@Stryc9 yea the volume was horrible I had to pretty much crank my speakers to hear at all eventually I stopped listening
Also didnt say this but thanks for mentioning the “Like a Boss” I saw it once on youtube when I had some friends over on my TiVo but forgot about it. Awesome shit.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
Well it was a surprise to see this in my podcast feed but as it turns out, a good surprise.
Even if it was British.
April 29th, 2009 at 5:18 am
@Fettbulle
Second PCG Malaysia.
Anyway it’s good to see the UK podcast get some exposure - lest it crumble n die. It goes onto the PCG UK Disc anyway I guess.
Will this continue?
@Dan
I gladly pay more for those extra ‘U’s, and I get marked down on my university papers if I leave them out !
April 29th, 2009 at 5:21 am
GunmanX: I’m not british, and why did you stop? I love trolling with trolls
April 29th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Ok this is the best podcast in the history of everything that is and will ever be. Loved the comment on killing children in fallout.
April 29th, 2009 at 10:52 am
@ Synte:
Man I have epic fail written all over this thread (I thought you were Netram). My troll meter is apparently running low. Must, be….. feddddddddddddddddddddd.
With trollflames and bait, not spinal fluid like on Fringe last night. Freaky.
April 29th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
I have to say, I was surprised to see a UK episode in the feed, but I enjoyed it. Since I don’t read their edition of the magazine, I have no idea who they are, but it was still good all the same. Hopefully we still get a regular episode this week, where I know who’s who.
April 30th, 2009 at 2:18 am
@Mario66
You’re an idiot, not joking.
Good to see the UK podcast getting a shot, wittiest podcasters ever IMO.
April 30th, 2009 at 11:09 am
I for one welcome our new British overlords. It means I can have all my favourite podcasts on the one website. Only downer is that they would be jumbled in with the US podcasts in my iPod podcast directory.
April 30th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
um yah tf2 Is a PAIN IN THE ASS to download its downloading at 160 KB pers secound and its gonna take like 4 hours
April 30th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
yawn
April 30th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
great stuff, good to see the UK team represent
April 30th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
Our hobby isn’t small enough, let’s alienate others because they’re not from this country. Yeah that’s worked out so well in the past.
I enjoyed this. I hope it isn’t replacing this week’s regular podcast but nice to get the views from “across the pond”
April 30th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
What language is that?
May 1st, 2009 at 1:21 am
While I consider the PCGUK podcasts to be invariably better, I’m still befuddled by this one being made avilable here. And with a several week delay to boot. Is this going to become a regular practice?
May 1st, 2009 at 2:53 am
Great idea to put both PCG podcasts in one place. I have listened to both for years.
They are surprisingly different podcasts. PCGUK: funny, chaotic, amateur, sarcastic (i.e. British) with moments of eloquent insight. PCGUS: consistent, high production values, detailed and interesting but often amazingly uninformed.
May 1st, 2009 at 3:13 am
I like PC Gamer UK Mag better than the USA one too cause I picked one up on holiday and the UK one has more in it and I like their reviews more and their features. Though I love the PC Gamer USA podcast but it needs a girl on there cause I normally listen before I go to bed and a girls voice is more soothing.
May 1st, 2009 at 2:01 pm
@ Sirenyde - zing!
yes just about as witty as your feedback
May 1st, 2009 at 2:18 pm
I find it humorous for someone to say “How do UK magazines stay afloat”? Clearly very well, since it’s dying in America and thriving over there. They have 3 magazines on PC games over there, all of them about 3 times the size of Game Informer.
The reason they are having so much trouble over here, other than the fact that distribution is much more difficult in America than the UK, is that it’s based on an ad revenue model, and the subscriptions are so cheap they don’t even cover the cost of paper it’s printed on.
May 3rd, 2009 at 2:40 pm
These guys are hilarious!
I’m going to listen to all the other PC gamer UK podcasts!
Keep up the good work guys!
